Vertebrates: comparative anatomy, function and evolution

Book description

This one-semester text is designed for an upper-level majors course. Vertebrates features a unique emphasis on function and evolution of vertebrates, complete anatomical detail, and excellent pedagogy. Vertebrate groups are organized phylogenetically, and their systems discussed within such a context. Morphology is foremost, but the author has developed and integrated an understanding of function and evolution into the discussion of anatomy of the various systems.

Amphibian declines: the conservation status of United States species

Preface (in part)

For much of the past decade and a half, reports of amphibian declines and developmental malformations have been featured in the scientific and popular press. These reports typically open or close with the question: Are amphibians telling us something about the state of the environment—are they canaries in the coal mine? The answer to this question, we now know, is an unequivocal yes. The first hint that all was not well with amphibians came at the First World Congress of Herpetology, held in Canterbury, England, in 1989. Here, the impression of amphibian losses by many respected herpetologists from around the world led to a 1990 workshop held in Irvine, California, entitled “Declining Amphibian Populations: A Global Phenomenon?” (Wake and Morowitz, 1991). At this meeting it became apparent that there was good reason for concern: amphibian disappearances that biologists had previously felt were simply a local problem were not—the problem was global. And what was most disturbing about these discussions was not that amphibians are disappearing from areas disturbed by humans (this was expected), but rather that they are disappearing in regions of the world once thought to be pristine.

Measuring and monitoring biological diversity: standard methods for amphibians

Abstract

Measuring and Monitoring Biological Diversity is the first book to provide comprehensive coverage of standard methods for biodiversity sampling of amphibians, with information on analyzing and using data that will interest biologists in general. In this manual, nearly fifty herpetologists recommend ten standard sampling procedures for measuring and monitoring amphibian and many other populations. The contributors discuss each procedure, along with the circumstances for its appropriate use. In addition, they provide a detailed protocol for each procedure's implementation, a list of necessary equipment and personnel, and suggestions for analyzing the data. The data obtained using these standard methods are comparable across sites and through time and, as a result, are extremely useful for making decisions about habitat protection, sustained use, and restoration decisions that are particularly relevant for threatened amphibian populations.

The biology of sea turtles Volume II

Preface

The success of the first volume of The Biology of Sea Turtles revealed a need for broad but comprehensive reviews of recent major advances in sea turtle biology. At that time, book size constraints as well as the fast-paced changes in some fields dictated that this need could be only partially addressed in a single volume. Many important topics were not covered and were left for future volumes. Volume II emphasizes practical aspects of biology that relate to sea turtle management and changes in marine and coastal ecosystems. These topics include the interactions of humans and sea turtles, an introduction to sea turtle anatomy, sensory and reproductive biology, sea turtle habitat use and ecology, stress and health, and the maintenance of captive animals. This volume provides both historical and up-to-presstime information. The field is growing dramatically as established scientists expand their views and fine new scientists bring their novel ideas, techniques, and perspectives to the understanding and application of the biology of marine turtles.

Biology of turtles

Preface
The first beasts that we identify as turtles emerged abruptly in the Triassic about 220 million years ago. Since then, countless diverse lineages of turtles—terrestrial, marine, freshwater, and in-between— have come and gone, yet many lineages persist for tens of millions to more than 100 million years. All bring with them the suite of traits that are uniquely turtle: a bony shell, usually a retractable neck, lack of trunk musculature, and limb girdles located inside the rib cage (instead of lying outside of it). The reptiles we identify as turtles, or testudines, or chelonians, have captivated many naturalists and other scientists because of these and other unique traits and their consequences.

Some 180 years ago while in Jena, Germany, Ludwig Heinrich Bojanus developed an interest
in the anatomy of the European turtle Emys obicularis. By dissecting specimens and illustrating
their anatomy over the next decade, Bojanus authored one of the most detailed studies on any
single vertebrate species, Anatome Testudinis Europaeae (1819–1821). This unparalleled book on turtle anatomy represents the intersection of his interests as a naturalist, comparative anatomist, veterinary surgeon, and teacher of anatomical art. It was because of this historical backdrop that the biology, particularly the anatomy, of turtles was visited again fittingly at the Sixth International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology, which was held in Jena in 2001. The symposium and its many contributed papers served as the foundation upon which this volume is based. However, this book goes beyond a morphologically based symposium in recognizing that the structures of turtles are particularly interesting and best understood within the context of their formation, their diversity of functions, their novelty, and their evolution. Whereas several areas of interest (e.g., turtle genetics, sensory systems and behavior, and life history evolution) are not included—as these fields continue to progress rapidly without a clear stable point—we have brought together a wide range of discussions on other novel features of turtles.
